Flyer Details
What will appear on my flyer
What: WhaleFest festival 2015. Which is a coming together or people all over the world both online and at special events to raise awareness about orca whales in captivity at SeaWorld.
When: The Brighton event will be taking place on the 23.7.15 and will run across a two day weekend. The online petitions are currently running across the internet (change.org, PETA)
Why: Hundreds of orca whales are kept in captivity in a pool that is less than 1% of their natural habitat. These campaigns and events aim to raise support to get orca whales released into sea penns where they can live out the rest of their lives
How: The events in Brighton will offer information about how SeaWorld treats the orca whales and how badly these animals are affected. It will encourage people of all ages to boycott SeaWorld and help to raise awareness and money to end captivity of orca whales. The online petitions will also benefit hugely from people signing up online in support of making captivity of orca whales illegal.
Who: Open to anyone and everyone to come and get involved and also be a part of a massive campaign online which is where the majority of the support should come from.

Poster trial 1
- Took inspiration from modern posters with the simplicity element of a single whale shape surrounded by a primary blue colour
- Used Illustrator to trace and expand and then adjusting the different levels
- I like the shape of the whale looking upwards, a possible signifier for orca whales looking for freedom - The inclusion of the two fins also make the animal appear to be lifting itself up, making for a dynamic image to be centred in the page
- Simple text type whilst experimenting, using the black and white colours featured on the whale images to give the poster and campaign simplicity and repetition
Points of interest for poster
Whale captivity:
- Flopped over dorsal fin
- Shortened life span
- Separated from family
- Small habitat (less than 1% of natural surroundings
- Made to perform

- Linear approach
- Consists of straight and curled lines

- Want to create a logo and poster for an event held by a whale captivity awareness organisation
- Different whale protection organisations include:

Background research on 'Free Tilikum' campaign
- 2012 documentary 'Blackfish' sparks outrage on SeaWorld's treatment of orca whales in captivity
- Following 'Blackfish' film, organisations and campaigns begin for the humanely release of the biggest orca ever kept in captivity Tilikum and all other orca whales
- Following 'Blackfish' film, organisations and campaigns begin for the humanely release of the biggest orca ever kept in captivity Tilikum and all other orca whales
- Poster/logo aims to illustrate hope important it is to go online and sign the petition in favour of the humanely release of orca whales at Sea World
Back to basics experimentation with photoshop to get ideas
- I found inspiration from simple designs such as pop art to play around properly with photoshop and experimenting with cutting out images effectively to put on top of a separate image
- Continued on to put together a bigger picture with more images on a different background. Doing this to experiment with how different textures can be effective together. I like the vibrance of the lips above and how it provokes a certain emotion when you look at it e.g. lust connotations

Further inspiring work
STEFAN SAGMEISTER
- Stefan Sagmeister's work plays on the colour schemes that represent each artist that is performing at the stadium
- This collection of logos inspired my idea to make a group of shapes that can be changed and rearranged for different events
- The triangles and circles can be translated into hosting different themes through what order they are put in and what colours are used on the inside
- e.g. 80's films will use 80's print, Film Noir films will use black and white print

Design idea
- Given that I want my poster to be advertising a film festival, I have taken inspiration from the ratings 'logos' and chosen to make a poster for a 60's film event
- I have arranged them in a pattern and want to film the shapes with different 60's prints
- The simplicity of the shapes will be contrasted with the vibrant patterns and colours
- I will experiment further with different ways of setting out the 6 shapes
